16 Days to Paradise: Why a California-to-Hawaii Cruise Might Be Your Perfect Hawaiian Vacation
16 Days to Paradise: Why a California-to-Hawaii Cruise Might Be Your Perfect Hawaiian Vacation
Imagine waking up to the sound of the Pacific Ocean, enjoying breakfast on your balcony, and knowing that Hawaii is getting closer every day.
Now imagine doing that without packing and unpacking for multiple hotels, navigating several airports, or worrying about how you're going to get from one Hawaiian island to another.
That's the beauty of a Hawaii cruise from California.
A 16-day roundtrip cruise from California to the Hawaiian Islands gives you the opportunity to experience several of Hawaii's most beautiful destinations while enjoying the cruise experience in between.
And as a travel advisor and Hawaii Destination Specialist, one of my favorite things about this type of vacation is that it can work for many different types of travelers.
But here's the secret:
There isn't one cruise line that's best for everyone.
The right cruise line depends on your age, travel style, budget, expectations, and what you want to do when you're not exploring Hawaii.
What Does a 16-Day California-to-Hawaii Cruise Look Like?
A typical 16-day Hawaii cruise from California includes a combination of relaxing sea days and several days exploring the Hawaiian Islands.
Current Princess itineraries, for example, sail roundtrip from Los Angeles or San Francisco and visit destinations such as:
- Honolulu, Oahu
- Hilo, Big Island
- Maui
- Kauai
- Ensenada, Mexico
- Multiple relaxing days at sea
Princess currently advertises 16-day Hawaiian Islands itineraries from both Los Angeles and San Francisco, with some Honolulu visits including a late-night stay so travelers have additional time to explore Oahu.
That combination is what makes this vacation so appealing.
You get Hawaii without having to fly between the islands.
And those sea days?
Don't think of them as wasted vacation days.
They're part of the experience.
You can sleep in, enjoy the pool, attend entertainment, take a class, enjoy a specialty restaurant, read a book, watch the Pacific Ocean go by, or simply do absolutely nothing.
Sometimes that's exactly what vacation is supposed to be.
Which Cruise Line Is Best for Your Hawaiian Vacation?
This is where having a travel advisor can make a big difference.
I don't simply ask, "What cruise is cheapest?"
I want to know:
Who is traveling?
What do you enjoy?
Do you want relaxation or nonstop entertainment?
Are you traveling with children?
Is this a romantic getaway?
Is this a milestone birthday or anniversary?
Do you want luxury?
Once I know those answers, I can help match you with the right cruise line.
Here are some of the options I would consider.
Ages 50+: Princess Cruises
My Pick for the Classic Hawaii Cruise Experience
For many couples in their 50s, 60s and beyond, Princess Cruises is an excellent match.
Princess has a strong presence in Hawaii, including 16-day roundtrip itineraries from California. Its current Hawaii program includes departures from Los Angeles and San Francisco and visits to the four major Hawaiian Islands on many itineraries.
Why I like Princess for Hawaii:
✔ Relaxed but not boring✔ Excellent destination focus✔ Plenty of sea-day activities✔ Good variety of dining✔ Strong entertainment program✔ Couples can enjoy plenty of quiet time✔ Multiple Hawaiian Islands on one itinerary✔ Great option for first-time Hawaii visitors
Princess is especially appealing if you're looking for a vacation that feels comfortable, polished and traditional without being overly formal.
And if you love Hawaii, Princess gives you a chance to experience several islands during one vacation.
Best for: Couples, empty nesters, multigenerational travelers and travelers who want a balanced cruise experience.
Ages 40–65: Holland America Line
For Travelers Who Love Food, Service & Relaxation
Holland America Line is another cruise line I would put on the list when considering a Hawaii cruise.
Holland America currently offers Hawaii itineraries ranging from approximately 14 to 28 days, including voyages departing from West Coast ports.
Holland America tends to appeal to travelers who appreciate:
✔ Excellent service✔ Relaxed atmosphere✔ Culinary experiences✔ Comfortable accommodations✔ Destination-focused travel✔ Fewer "party ship" vibes✔ Enrichment and cultural experiences
If your idea of a perfect vacation is:
"Give me great food, beautiful scenery, a comfortable ship and plenty of time to relax."
Holland America may be worth considering.
Best for: Couples, mature travelers, foodies and travelers who prefer a quieter, more sophisticated cruise atmosphere.
Ages 30–50: Looking for More Energy?
If you're younger or simply young at heart and want more energy onboard, I'd look at cruise lines with a stronger emphasis on entertainment, activities and nightlife.
For travelers who want their cruise to feel like a vacation destination and an entertainment experience, other contemporary cruise brands may be a better fit.
Your age isn't really the deciding factor.
Your personality is.
I've met travelers in their 70s who want the most active vacation possible and travelers in their 30s who want nothing more than a quiet balcony and a good book.
That's why I don't believe in choosing a cruise based solely on age.
Adults Looking for a More Relaxed Experience
If you're traveling as a couple and don't need children's programming, nightlife or a huge amount of onboard activity, I would focus more heavily on:
Dining + service + ship atmosphere + itinerary + cabin location.
For these travelers, Princess and Holland America are two cruise lines I would seriously consider when evaluating California-to-Hawaii options.
The itinerary matters just as much as the ship.
After all...
You're going to Hawaii.
Why Cruise to Hawaii Instead of Flying?
This is one of the biggest questions I get.
Why spend 16 days when you could simply fly to Hawaii?
Because a cruise gives you a completely different vacation experience.
Flying to Hawaii
You fly to one island.
You stay at a hotel or resort.
You rent a car or arrange transportation.
You fly to another island.
You pack.
You unpack.
You check in.
You check out.
Then you do it again.
Cruising to Hawaii
You unpack once.
Your hotel travels with you.
Your meals are available onboard.
Entertainment is included.
Your transportation between islands is handled.
And each morning you wake up somewhere new.
That can be especially attractive for travelers who want to see multiple Hawaiian Islands without constantly changing hotels.
The Hawaiian Islands You'll Want to Explore
One of the biggest advantages of a Hawaii cruise is the opportunity to experience the islands' very different personalities.
Oahu — Honolulu
Oahu offers a wonderful mix of history, beaches, shopping, food and culture.
Don't miss the opportunity to explore:
- Waikiki Beach
- Pearl Harbor
- Diamond Head
- North Shore
- Local Hawaiian cuisine
Some Princess Hawaii itineraries include a late-night stay in Honolulu, giving travelers additional time to experience Oahu.
The Big Island — Hilo
Hilo provides an entirely different Hawaiian experience.
This is where I'd consider exploring:
- Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
- Waterfalls
- Black sand beaches
- Tropical gardens
- Mauna Kea
The Big Island is about nature, volcanoes and dramatic landscapes.
Maui
Maui is one of those places where you could easily spend a week and still have more to see.
Depending on your itinerary, you might consider:
- Haleakala
- Road to Hana
- Whale watching
- Snorkeling
- Beaches
- Scenic drives
And if you're visiting during whale season, Maui can be particularly special.
Kauai
Known as the Garden Isle, Kauai is a favorite for travelers who love natural beauty.
Think:
🌿 Lush mountains🌊 Dramatic coastlines💦 Waterfalls🏔️ Waimea Canyon🌺 Tropical scenery
Kauai is a destination that makes you want to slow down and enjoy the view.
🌊 Don't Underestimate the Sea Days
One of the most important things I tell clients considering a Hawaii cruise is this:
You need to enjoy being on the ship.
A California-to-Hawaii cruise involves several days at sea.
That can be a huge advantage...
if you enjoy cruising.
Sea days give you time to:
☀️ Sit by the pool📚 Read a book🍹 Enjoy a cocktail🍽️ Try specialty dining🎭 Watch a show💃 Dance🏋️ Exercise🧖 Relax at the spa🎲 Play games🌊 Watch whales or dolphins❤️ Spend uninterrupted time together
In today's world, having several days where nobody expects you to be anywhere can be a luxury.
What I Would Recommend Booking
If you're considering a 16-day Hawaii cruise, I recommend looking at more than just the cruise fare.
Your overall vacation can include:
✈️ Flights to California
🏨 Pre-cruise hotel
🚢 16-day Hawaii cruise
🚌 Transfers
🌺 Hawaiian excursions
🍽️ Specialty dining
🏨 Post-cruise hotel, if needed
✈️ Flights home
And this is where working with me can really simplify the process.
Instead of booking each component separately and trying to make everything work together, I can help coordinate the pieces of your vacation.
My Favorite Part? You Only Unpack Once.
That's one of the biggest reasons I love the California-to-Hawaii cruise concept.
You can experience multiple Hawaiian Islands without changing hotels.
You don't have to figure out inter-island flights.
You don't have to drag your luggage through multiple airports.
You simply wake up somewhere new.
And every morning brings another possibility.
One vacation.
Four Hawaiian Islands.
16 days of memories.
Is a Hawaii Cruise Right for You?
If you've always dreamed of Hawaii but don't want to plan a complicated island-hopping vacation...
this could be your answer.
If you're celebrating:
🎂 A milestone birthday💍 An anniversary🎓 A graduation👨👩👧👦 A family reunion🥂 Retirement❤️ A honeymoon🌴 Or simply the fact that you deserve a vacation...
I'd love to help you explore your options.
As a Hawaii Destination Specialist and travel advisor, I can help you compare cruise lines, ships, cabins, itineraries, excursions, flights, hotels and transfers to create a Hawaii vacation that fits you.
Because the best cruise isn't necessarily the cheapest cruise.
And it's not necessarily the newest ship.
It's the cruise that fits the way YOU want to travel.
